Flu or Cold? Try Mustard Bath to Detox

This is flu and cold season.  The best defense is an offense, and doing a detox with mustard bath is a good way to stay ahead of the germs and the H1N1.

A hot bath with Epsom Salts or other bath salts, coupled with Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath will detox your body. Eliminating toxins, which weaken the immune system, helps rid your body of potential bouts with flu and colds. The idea here, though, is to keep on top of it.  By regularly taking a hot detox bath - which raises body temperature - you are killing off germs.  That’s what a fever does where you’re sick.  It’s the body’s natural reaction to the virus.  Why not help it?

When my throat feels scratchy and I fear I might be bitten by some errant bug, I jump in the tub and ‘boil’ myself for an hour or two.  I guess, too, that I am blessed with a good immune system, but I never get sick.  I don’t get colds and haven’t had the flu in over 30 years.  (knock wood)

I’m not saying that Dr. Singha’s Mustard bath will cure the  H1N1 flu  or a cold once it’s gotten a good grip on you. No, it’s just a good cold and flu fighter and keeps your system running better to fight off illness.

Healing Power of Bath Salts

This is my own testimony to the healing effects of detox baths and bath salts.

On Christmas Eve, I took a nasty fall on the stairs inside my home.  I missed the last step and went down like a ton of bricks.  Most of my weight landed on my right hand and knee, but my fall was broken (thankfully) by some boxes at the foot of the stairs.  As I was falling, and apparently by instinct trying to find balance, I yanked down the brass hall tree, which fell on top of me.  I got ’stabbed’ on the back by one of the arms of the tree, leaving a cut and nasty bruise.  My leg had a bruise that ran from my kneecap half way up my thigh!  (I’m gettin’ too old for acrobatics!)

That night I knew the best thing to do was to take a hot bath in Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath. This I knew from other ‘over-exertions’ would draw some of the soreness and pain out of my body.

Being injured produces a myriad of chemical reactions in the body.  Physical effects include stiffness wherein the affected area tries to immobilize itself to heal torn or stretched  ligaments or bruises.  We also react unconsciously, by limiting our movements. Taking a hot bath in salts or a detox solution helps to relieve pain and stiffness.  It draws toxins from the injured area away and out. Old blood that has pooled due to bruising is stimulated to move out, reducing more pain.

The next morning -  I could not believe how sore I wasn’t! I thought for sure I’d really be hobbling and unable to move.  Yeah, my knee was touchy and the immediate area where it was bruised was tender, but all in all - I truly believe the detox bath helped!

‘Tis the season for slipping and sliding on icy stairs and sidewalks.  A Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath and oil in your medicinal arsenal will do wonders to help with winter acrobatics!

Pesticide Exposure & Food

Pesticides pose a health risk to humans, especially children.  Because the ‘pests’ they are designed to kill - insects, fungi and plants, their use in the past half century has become the norm.  Not only farmers use them but the average household uses a frightening amount each year.

Pesticide manufacturers will SWEAR that these products are safe.  I once attended a seminar given by some of the folks at Ortho, Spectracide and others.  I was absolutely enraged to hear these men LIE about being able to put these toxins on FOOD, then eat them an hour later!  I wanted to stand up and scream…, alas, it would have meant the end of my job.  They will defend them to the minute they are pulled off the market!

Recent studies show that they cause damage in the following areas of human health:

Skin, lung and eye irritations

Neurological systems

Hormone

Carcinogenic effects

What can you do?  Limit your exposure as much as possible and detox your body often. This list gives information of how you can help yourself avoid pesticides and why!

Just a simple start of a detox bath once or twice a week, plus eating organic food, drinking purified water can go a long way to help reduce the toxic load.  These poisons accumulate in the body, so it’s time to get rid of them - for a healthier YOU !

Healing Bath Salts

Until a few years ago, only the most savvy spa worshiper had probably even heard of detoxing with salts.  Now, however, bath salts, aromatic bath salts, along with Epsom salts have become well known.

Salt has long been used as a purifier.  Salt was, and still is in some cultures, used as a preservative.  Now, however, it is used for detoxification and cleansing.

Containing many different minerals depending on its origin, salt’s healing properties have been extolled for centuries.  Its exfoliating action not only strips dead skin cells but actually draws out toxins upon contact with the skin.  When mixed with organic oils, which also have their own healing properties, salt promotes rejuvenation of the skin through many layers.

Bathing in itself is relaxing and healing, perhaps taking us back to our time in the womb…, who knows?

Tis the season for colds and flu which makes taking a hot detox bath even more important for overall health.  Add some aromatic bath salts and organic oils to your next bath and see if you don’t instantly feel better!

DON’T touch that - it’s POISON!”

Americans spread MILLIONS of tons of toxic lawn chemicals in their yards every year. Obsessed with eliminating every pest, every weed, they ignore the fact that they are exposing their children and pets to POISON.

Advocating non-chemical remedies, I have never put chemicals down,  and never will.  I know too much.  I’ve never really understood the obsession Americans have about having the perfect lawn.  My lawn is green, I mow it, and that’s IT.  Why poison yourself, your kids and the eco-system for a lawn?

I worked for Lowe’s in the garden center for 5 years. Each week I’d watch thousands of pounds of poison go out the door in this one store. People were fanatical about their lawns and didn’t even think about what they were doing! A common, and especially toxic product, 2-4-D is found in the popular brand WEED-B-GONE.

Ironically, part of my job was to sell lawn care products.  I hated it.  It went against everything I believe in.  I’m an environmentalist and I jokingly refer to chemicals as being ‘against my religion.’ I would always opt for pitching the lowest toxicity remedy.

One day a man came in with his three children in tow,  their approximate ages being 7, 5 and 3.  He wanted Diazinon.  I said it’s been banned for almost 10 years now, but the replacement was Triazicide.  We walked over to where the bags were stacked and I answered his questions.

During the conversation, one of the kids started smacking the bag of Triazicide with her hand, like petting a big dog on the head.  The father jumped forward, yanked the kid’s hand away and shouted,

“DON’T TOUCH THAT, it’s POISON!”

I wanted to reply in a calm but sarcastic voice…..

“Yes, it’s POISON and you’re going to take it home, spread it on your lawn and then your kids and dog are going to go out and play in it!”

Children are especially susceptible to illness resulting from pesticide exposure. Instead of rehashing the articles, I’ve included links below.

ALL lawn chemicals like TRIAZICIDE, WEED-B-GONE are DANGEROUS - PERIOD! (no, you can’t use them on your veggie gardens, folks!)

Not only are these substances dangerous for children, but they are dangerous for adults, pets and the environment.  It’s time to end the love affair with toxins because the health of your family - and the planet - depends on it.

You can  help speed the detox process by taking a detox bath on a regular basis, doing juice fasts and getting more exercise and having a regular massage.  This will help eliminate toxins from your body.

WHAT’S ON YOUR LAWN?

Is the health of your lawn more important than the health of your children?

Chemicals Around You

Every single aspect of our lives has in it artificial components of plastic, out-gassing (fumes) or toxins of some sort.  The sad part about this is that the entire population of this world had no say - and is totally unaware that manufacturers, food producers, agribusiness and technology has contributed to it every day.

Chemicals surround us.  Our computers are made from plastics which release chemicals into our environment.  If we’ve sworn off caffeine, and drink decaf instead, chances are we’re getting a good dose of chemicals from the decaffeination process. Got that suit back from the cleaners?  Guess what it’s been cleaned with?  Dry cleaning fluid=chemicals.

If your kids play sports like football or soccer they’re probably rolling around on turf treated with herbicides, pesticides and other toxic lawn chemicals. Additionally, children are especially at risk for health-related illness from pesticide residues.

Think you’re safe at work?  Your company probably has a contract with an extermination service and sometimes you’re even sitting at your desk when the guy comes through with the little sprayer tank!  Millions of Americans go to work in environments chocked full of chemicals:  manufacturing facilities with dust and fumes from chemicals, heavy metals, plastic compounds, cleaning solutions,  paints, glues and pesticides.  Even if your job does not put you in direct or daily contact, you are still at risk.

WHAT TO DO?

DETOX and eat the cleanest diet that you can.  Make every meal a high quailty one of fresh (organic) foods, filtered water.  Replace the toxins you introduce into your body in your own home with organic personal care products.

Make every day count!

Detox Baths & Healthy Herbs

Detox is an important facet of modern life. Our bodies cannot rid themselves of the modern compounds we are surrounded with.

Thousands of times a day we are exposed to toxins in the form of pollution, pesticides, chemicals in our food and personal care products.  Additives in processed food, plastics (phthalates) leaching from containers into the food we eat, water bottles, from microwaving food in plastic containers. 80 % of coffee is decaffeinated with chemical solvents ( methylene chloride or ethyl acetate).  Water processed organic coffee is the best bet for decaf.  The clothes you’ve gotten back from the dry cleaners are laced with the chemical perchloroethylene. Nice, Huh?

An ancient remedy used in Ayurvedic medicine in India, turmeric, contains a wealth of healing properties.  In recent publications by oncologists, turmeric has been touted as one of the best detoxifying agents available. Studies have shown that people in countries that consume it daily, cancer rates are extremely low.

In addition to adding beneficial herbs to your diet, a good detox regimen will help you cleanse your body of chemicals.  The idea is to SWEAT - either in a hot bath  or sauna but only if your doctor has advised it is safe for you.   Mustard baths, long a remedy for amazing and effective cleansing are another method.

Relaxing in a hot detox bath is good for your mood as well as what ails you.  It also helps to ward off those yucky winter bugs that are going around.

ADHD Drugs

An article appeared in Reuters on children on medication for ADHD having hallucinations. Why is this no surprise?

The use of Ritalin and its cousins, all nervous system excitants, became the drug of choice during the 80s and 90s.  Ritalin is one of the most over prescribed drugs on the market today.  Although certain criteria should be met before assuming a child truly is ADHD, many physicians and parents are too quick to assume their child truly is ADHD, when all that may be needed is a ‘cleaner’ diet.

We’ve all seen kids bounce off the walls after eating high doses of sugar, haven’t we?  Why is it so strange to some that FOOD may actually be the cause of supposed ADHD in your kid?

The typical American diet is loaded with sugar and chemical additives. Browse any supermarket aisle containing lunch items and you will find a disturbing array of ‘food-like substances’ designed for convenience for Moms packing kids’ school lunches.  Food marketed as ‘healthy’ or a ‘good, nutritious lunch for your kids’ or ‘healthy snacks’ often contains more artificial ingredients than real, actual food.  Even so-called healthy yogurts:  low or no fat varieties of one popular brand, Yoplait, have a scary list of artificial ingredients.

Don’t fall for the claims of fast-food purveyors, either.  Every parent.., no.., make that every person, should read ‘Fast Food Nation’ by Eric Schlosser if you eat fast food.  Morgan Spurlock’s book, “Supersize Me”, which came out after the academy nominated movie, gives a behind-the-scenes look at McDonald’s and the fast food industry.  I guarantee, you’ll never feel the same about eating out after reading these two books.

ADHD is a real condition due to the brain’s neural transmissions and actual brain development. Rather than assuming your kid IS actually ADHD and is not just being a ‘normal’ kid with that kid energy, don’t automatically go for the doctor’s insistence on a drug regimen. Parents should consider a natural approach first.  What is your child eating during the day?  What IS IN their food that might be causing this?

Consulting with a licensed nutritionist or dietitian, having a chemical analysis done might be a good first step.  A cleaner diet, free of artificial chemicals, all sugars, no soda - might go a long way to helping the child.  Because studies have indicated that there are an average of 1,000 household  toxins in a child’s home  environment, eliminating these elements may also have some bearing.

As an old friend used to say:  “Start simple.”  It may be the most beneficial way to help your child.

Bath Salts, Detox & Massage

A healthy body needs to rid itself of toxins.  A beneficial treatment is a massage, followed by a detox bath using bath salts.

Massage stimulates the body physically, mentally and emotionally, assisting healing and enabling the body to heal itself.  One of the ways that you can help your body is to follow a massage with a detox bath using aromatic bath salts and herbal remedies.

Following a massage, your body’s entire system is in a cleansing mode.  Human touch itself is a basic need of life;  our body actually responds to touch in beneficial ways. Direct stimulation of muscles helps carry toxins out of the body which is why, following a massage, you should drink plenty of water to flush your body.

The evening after a massage, you can continue the benefits by taking a detox bath in aromatic bath salts or sea salts. The action of the salts further stimulate the circulation which draws out toxins.  Other remedies, such as a mustard bath, combined with the salts increases the effects of the bath salts.  Epsom salts, which are very permeable through the skin, also serve to enhance the action of the bath or sea salts.

The scent of the aromatic bath salts - or the mustard bath - acts as an olfactory stimulation which relaxes you, assisting further in detoxing.

Help your body heal.  Schedule a massage, then go home and soak in a good hot bath!

Detox With Food

If you’ve done any reading at all on statistics of cancer worldwide, nations with the greatest intake of processed food have the highest rates of this disease.

While browsing the book, Foods to Fight Cancer by Richard Beliveau, Ph.D and Denis Gingras, Ph.D (DK Books, 2007 ISBN# 978-0-7566-2867-3) a map showing the global distribution of cancer incidences tells all. North America, Europe, Australia, Eastern Europe (Hungary & the Czech Republic) are colored in bright red showing highest rates. Most favorable are the dark green areas: parts of western Africa, and Southeast Asian nations of India, Thailand, and China are lowest.

Industrialized nations, which consume greater amounts of processed foods containing artificial ingredients with no nutritional value, more meat and dairy, high sodium, sugar and chemical additives, are far more at risk for cancer. In regions which eat a diet made up of unprocessed natural foods: fruits, vegetables, nuts and soy, are far less likely to develop it.

The traditional Japanese diet, high in vegetables, fish, soy, with little consumption of meat, is today being replaced by Western fare. Presently in Asia there has been a tremendous increase in “Western diseases” because of the switch to industrialized eating

Michael Pollen pointed out in his book, A Guide to Food - An Eater’s Manifesto that humans today are eating a diet of “food-like substances,” meaning processed foods; fast food, sodas, canned, boxed, microwaveable, which rely on chemicals for taste. He stresses that we should read labels very carefully.  We should stay away from packaged items with more than 5 ingredients, and from those made up of chemical compounds. “Don’t eat food with ingredients you can’t pronounce.” he cautions.  The ideal diet should be what our bodies were designed to eat:  mostly vegetables and only “what our grandmothers would recognize as food.” I take that one step further and reword it to what our great grandmothers would recognize as food.

Typical Western diets focus on quickly providing the body with fuel. Asian diets, on the other hand, use food to maintain health. The axiom “food is medicine” certainly applies here. After all, doesn’t what we eat affect our health?

It is interesting to note that Westerners also approach medicine differently than their Asian counterparts. Americans seek medical care to ‘treat’ illness which is directly related diet. In efforts to preserve health, people from Eastern countries are more likely to eat naturally and use ancient remedies, thus preventing illness.

Research indicates that risk factors for cancer are:

Poor dietary habits 30%

Smoking 30%

Hereditary factors 15%

Obesity & lack of exercise 5%

Work-place related exposure 5%

Infection 5%

Alcohol 3%

Pollution 2%

UV-ray exposure 2%

Drugs 1%

Other 1%

The top 2 factors are within everyone’s control; hereditary we can do nothing about. We can, however, choose what we eat or whether to smoke or the amount of exercise we get. A good detox regimen:  a series of detox baths, followed by a detox diet and organic foods will help rid the body of toxins, reducing the chance of cancer.

Out of everything, the diet may be the easiest act to clean up and there is no better time than your next meal or trip to the grocery store.
